The House Renovation Project – Week 4 Update
We are now nearing the end of 4 weeks into The House Renovation Project and I thought you’d better have an update. If you’ve been following, you’ll know we are creating a downstairs open-plan living space that will be part of the original house and part new extension. We’ll also be going upwards and converting the loft, so give us the family home we desire.
4 weeks in and there’s been a helluva lot of progress…
House Renovation Project Update
So this last week, the scaffold for the loft conversion has started to go up. The builders have had to build brick columns to support the steel rods as they go in. These rods are a necessity as we are knocking down so many walls downstairs and because of the extra weight from the loft conversion. So it’s a bit mad to see the back of the house open and the steel rods sticking out. You can also see through to the ground floor from the rooms upstairs.
Windows
The windows have also been delivered to site, so they’ll be going in fairly soon – I think that’ll feel like a big change, as it’ll change the appearance of the house quite significantly.
Cornice and skirting boards
We wanted to retain the original cornice and skirting boards throughout the house, except in the new open-plan living space. Unfortunately the skirting boards would’ve created too much work (and expense) to get them looking up-to-scratch, so we’ll be going for some new ones, with a bit of character to retain the original feel. The cornicing is largely ok, but has cracked and chipped-away in places during the works so far. But our plasterer has assured us these gaps can be filled-in and mended to disguise, so we don’t have to replace them.
The downstairs hallway though has been altered and bashed about so much, that I think we’re going to have to find replacement cornice for that space.
My jobs for the week
- Find a flueless gas log burner for the snug/living room.
- Source our family bathroom suite.
- Source 4x tall radiators for the extension (we want these to be in grey/anthracite to match our bifold doors).
So there’s our renovation update for week 4. Lots going on! If you haven’t already, catch-up on Week 1 and Weeks 2-3.
