The House Renovation Project – Dormer Attic Conversion

Here’s another video update on The House Renovation Project as we’re entering week 11 of the renovation. But where the previous updates (which you can see here) have been mainly focused on the main house and the downstairs extension, this one reveals where we’re up to with the dormer attic conversion…

Dormer Attic Conversion

The original house is a 3-bed, but with a hopefully growing family and frequent visitors, along with the desire for this to be our “forever home” (or at least the home we’ll leave in for the next big stint), we really needed it to be a 4-bed.

With the downstairs extension, we could have designed it so the wrap-around came right round and level with the front of the house, creating the space for a downstairs 4th bedroom or study and we could have gone for a 2-storey extension, giving more space upstairs.

HOWEVER, we thought that we didn’t want to compromise the original design of the house and it’s curb-appeal too much and therefore decided to start our extension, about half-way down the side of the house, wrapping around in an L-Shape. This would give a small but essential space to the side for a utility room and downstairs WC and shower-room.

BECAUSE, doing a 2-storey extension would have meant re-configuring the entire upstairs to make usable rooms with good scale, we decided we’d rather have more ceiling height in the downstairs extension and therefore we’d get our much needed 4th bedroom in the attic (or loft, as some prefer to call it).

Attic conversion

So we had a large bedroom with ensuite bathroom designed for the attic space, which would be transformed and incorporated into the house, with a dormer window for added ceiling height and standing space.

Here’s video number 1, which shows the space as a shell…

And here’s the second video, which shows walls and staircase gone in…

We’re so pleased and surprised at the size that we’ve achieved in the dormer attic conversion and can’t wait to think about how it’s going to be designed!

Have you converted your attic? How did you design the space? Need inspo!

Check out Week 6 and Week 8 too.
