On Trend – Tiles for Scandinavian Kitchen Designs

If you’re anything like me, you’re a bit interiors-obsessed at the minute. I keep trawling through various interior design magazines, blogs and Pinterest to find keep up with the interior design trends and get inspo for the rest of our renovation project.

One of the first spaces we completed in our new home was the kitchen and I’m super pleased with the results and think we’ve showcased our eclectic tastes, whilst keeping it clean and simple…not quite Scandi, but definitely Scandi-inspired…

Are you hunting for a look that is perfect for your kitchen?

Undoubtedly, you would have come across the Scandinavian design and its beautiful focus on simplicity and you might be wondering how you can emulate that style in your own home?

The Scandi look takes inspiration from an industrial chic aesthetic that focuses more on a softer and clean colour palette. It’s simplicity is what gives it that stylish edge over other designs, for a contemporary finish. From what I’ve researched, for your kitchen, the best way to start to achieve this Scandi-inspired design, is with your tiles. Before you start accessorising and decorating, you need to first sort out a strong base for your design and this is why choosing the right tiles is crucial.

White Metro Tiles

The tile of the moment, metro tiles, are perfect for Scandi kitchens and it’s something we went with in our kitchen too. Their vintage-inspired look is ideal for those minimalistic styles that still want a bit of character. Metro tiles have a rich history and first rose to popularity after their heavy use on the London Underground in the early 1900s (perhaps that’s why I love them so much…they remind me of home?!). A great tip for styling metro tiles is to pair white metro wall tiles with dark flooring for a contrasting look that will make your floor look larger and your walls taller. This is especially important if you are working with a smaller space and something we’re really pleased we did!

Hexagon Tiles

Favoured for their geometric shape, hexagon tiles add a beautiful touch of fluidity to any wall or floor. The Scandinavian looks focuses heavily on shapes, in particular geometric shapes, so the hexagon tile couldn’t be any more perfect. These tiles, with a contrasting grout colour, really make the shape pop and draw more attention to their stunning design. We went for a hexagonal tile on our downstairs wet-room floor (yet to be complete, so photos coming soon!).

White Square Tiles

Like the metro tile, white square tiles are simple and classic and you can’t go far wrong. They suit nearly any design but are great for a Scandi look since they work well with the simplicity ethos. Additionally, white kitchen tiles are far more versatile and will make selling-on your home in the future that bit easier (not that we plan to sell anytime soon!).

Wood Effect Tiles

No Scandi looks is complete without the use of wood. Its natural and earthy tones are perfect for that slightly modern yet rustic look that the Scandi look calls for. Now I was a bit sceptical about wood-effect tiles when we embarked on this renovation project, but I’m coming round to the idea more and am thinking I’d be far more likely to decorate with them now. The good quality ones do seem to give you that same great wood look, but with the added benefit of being waterproof and easier to clean and maintain long-term and if you go for under-floor heating, there’ll be toasty under foot too. It’s something I’m really considering for our home office, but can’t quite decide…

The Scandi trend has been around for a little while, but doesn’t seem to be disappearing! I think its fairly neutral simplicity appeals to many tastes and is timeless, which means it is adaptable in the future should you want to redesign again. I think it’s a home trend that’s here to stay don’t you?

What trends are you loving at the moment? What do I need to be checking out?
