Wicked at The Lowry
‘Are people born wicked or do they have wickedness thrust upon them…?’
How have I not been to see Wicked before?! It’s friggin’ awesome!
I will admit that I’d totally dismissed Wicked as a musical when it first came out and never bothered to go and see it. I’ve had plenty of friends over the years that have been to see it and loved it, but for some reason, it just passed me by.
So when I was invited to enjoy the Press Night at The Lowry Theatre, Manchester, I knew I had to give it a go and boy am I glad that I did!
For starters, it was a lovely summer’s evening in Manchester and it was a welcome relief from a hard week at work. The Lowry Theatre, in Salford Quays is a great location and a perfect sized theatre to enjoy an evening of musical entertainment. We started with an early dinner at Wagamamas in the Quays before making our way over to find our seats, just before the show started.
Now, all I knew about Wicked, was that it was something to do with a green witch and something to do with The Wizard of Oz (one of the all time great musicals). So when it started, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but I was instantly enthralled and chuckling away to the cleverly written script and the great comic performance of Ga-linda! Before I knew it, musical number after musical number passed and Act 1 climaxed with the amazing song ‘Defying Gravity’. What simply stunning voices those actors have…like ridiculous!
Absolutely raving about how good Act 1 was, we made our way for drinks and popcorn in the press lounge during the intermission, chatting away about the clever nuances and references to The Wizard of Oz. Â You could tell everyone was buzzing. Then back to our seats for Act 2 which was full of more singing and dancing and brought a clever close to the story of this unlikely friendship.
Everyone left the theatre with smiles on their faces and chatting about what they’d just seen. From kids to adults, you could tell everyone had a wicked time at the Wicked musical. I heard comments from people that had seen Wicked before throughout the years, that this cast was particularly spectacular, so if you’re based in the North ofrheading to Manchester in June or July, I would highly recommend that you put this on your list of things-to-do.
The show is running now until Saturday 25th July and you can tell why its won over 100 international awards in its 9 year run.Â
Head over to The Lowry’s website to see show times and let me know if you end up going along!
